UK’s biggest World and Roots music mag Songlines is carrying a piece about the World Organ at Sound of Jura in its edition for Jan 2021.

Giles Perring has been hosting residencies on Jura by painter and film maker Andy Metcalf. The pair have collaborated on work that has taken shape as a stunning immersive installation and exhibition called ‘EXPOSURE’. The project has taken in film and video, sound and music, 35mm and medium format photography and painting. Why not take a look at the preview of the work here….

A while back, Giles Perring, of Sound of Jura built some giant outdoor musical instruments with members of the community, which are permanently sited at Corran Sands for all comers to play on. Now he has added to his sonic fixtures in the Jura landscape with the WORLD ORGAN. This time however, you don’t need to be on the island to appreciate it, as it streams its haunting soundscape across the world, live. Part musical instrument, part environmental art, you can tune in to the livestream, and watch Giles’ time-lapse photography of the instrument at www.worldorgan.com

We’re all islanders in a pandemic

Giles Perring has just completed work on the mix and assembly of his performance of ‘The Exchange’ which was the finale of the CHArts Argyll and Isles Showcase in Oban last year. Featuring alongside Giles on Jura, and participants from all over the world, who phoned in their contributions live. Look and listen out for Melanie Pappenheim, Catriona Price, Teitur, Esther Swift, John Cayley, Kevin Godley, Ian Stephen, Lorne Macdougall, Jørn Snorre Andersen and Kirsty Law.

The Exchange is a sound and music event Giles devised to perform with other contributors who take part live via a simple telephone call. It’s a template for a live streaming musical/sound event that Giles first performed at an improvised music club, upstairs at the Centurion, in Deptford, London in 2001. Taking inspiration from his marvel at the telephone call as a means of communication; a love of remote listening; the communities who populate thru-the-night phone-ins; and the dreamlike shortwave radio explorations of Stockhausen, Giles has updated the piece every time he has done it since its debut in 2001. This, the fifth rendition, unfolded to an invited audience in the Sound Of Jura studio in Scotland and streamed to the world via a 4G uplink to the inaugural showcase for Argyll’s Art and Culture organisation CHArts Argyll and Isles, at St John’s Cathedral in Oban. With voices calling in from all over Argyll, and the world, The Exchange is an evocation of our solitude, and our connectedness.

Giles Perring is visiting his piece The Exchange for the Showcase Launch of CHARTS Argyll and the Isles, which happens in Oban 14/09/19. His performance is streaming live from Jura to the event in Oban, and across the web too. He’s shot a couple of preview teasers videos, and you can follow his progress on Facebook too.

Hot on the heels of the piece in the Guardian, Radio 4’s Open Country is covering creative life on Jura this week with a piece featuring Giles Perring and other members of a new artistic collective here on Jura called FL:EDGE.
